New drug delivery systems based on polymeric silk fibroin
Authors
Abstract:
Nowadays, design and synthesis of efficient drug delivery systems are of vital importance in order to optimize the efficacy of therapeutics and reducing side effects. So far, many drug delivery systems have been designed, among them, natural polymer-based systems have attracted the most attention. Silk fibroin (SF) as a natural polymer have several unique properties including excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability, good mechanical behavior, ease of processability with ability to fabricate various structures e.g., nanoparticles, microparticles, fibers, hydrogels, films, that makes it a suitable material for biomedical applications especially drug delivery vehicles. In this review, we discuss the drug delivery applications of SF, in detail.

The pharmaceutical utility of silk fibroin (SF) materials for drug delivery was investigated. SF films were prepared from aqueous solutions of the fibroin protein polymer and crystallinity was induced and controlled by methanol treatment. Dextrans of different molecular weights, as well as proteins, were physically entrapped into the drug delivery device during processing into films. Drug relea...

The objective of this proof-of-concept study was to develop a platform for controlled drug delivery based on silk fibroin (SF) and to explore the feasibility of using SF in oral drug delivery. The SF-containing matrixes were prepared via spray-drying and film casting, and the release profile of the model drug naproxen sodium was evaluated. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared...
